I've used this box and brand of saxophone reeds (3 strength Vandorens) for my classical saxophone playing. I've always trusted this brand for its quality.
Let's go ahead (in the video) and open up this sealed reed and see what we have...
Now, the reason why they wrap them individual wrappers is because inside of the sealed pouch there is a specific humidity.
So, the humidity inside of the sealed wrapper is specifically for the cane reed inside so that it doesn't dry out, primarily.
This preserves the reed quality for much longer, than had they shipped it without any of these bags/wrappers.
I trust this brand for my classical saxophone playing or for if I'm playing in orchestral settings like wind ensemble where a good solid tone is required. (Nothing too jazzy).
I would use these reeds in the blue box for more classical music, particularly when I'm studying the saxophone.
So, now as I look at this reed I can see that it looks like it has a great shape. There are some grains that don't quite match the overall even-ness. Though, all-in-all it's not a bad reed.
Thing about 3 strength reeds is that it helps to develop your embouchure. 2.5 reeds (while easy to use for beginners) won't help develop a good embouchure for good tone quality. You're going to want to upgrade to 3 strength reeds as soon as you can.
Playing on 3 strength reeds may be a little tricky early on, but you're going to end up with a much better sound and more control when you play on 3 strength reeds.
Vandoren 3 reeds are excellent for classical, or otherwise studying the instrument.
Fly through those scales by getting the basics right with these reeds:
Good/controlled tone
Good articulation
Nothing fancy
I've trusted 3 strength Vandoren reeds for over 10-15 years now and I highly recommend them for students just starting out.
If you want to take your saxophone playing to the next level, get 3 strength reeds.
